“I was scared that I would lose my home” – how a ‘rescue angel’ money adviser’s support changed everything for Wombourne man
A chance encounter between a Housing Plus Group resident and a money adviser has highlighted the life-changing impact of timely financial advice, as the organisation marks Advice Week 2026.
When John Noble, who lives at Maywood in Wombourne – an independent living scheme for people over the age of 55 – lost his wife, Chris last November, he was left navigating not only the grief following her death but also uncertainty about his future.
However, for John a case of being in the right place at the right time meant that during a particularly tough day, he bumped into Toni Roberts, Employment and Money Adviser.
The 78-year-old said: “After losing Chris, I was in a dark place, I was struggling both mentally and physically. One of the things many people don’t talk about after the passing of a loved one is the uncertainty about the future, which is often brought about because of the financial aspect.
“I was scared that I would lose my home because I could no longer afford the rent on my own, and I didn’t seek any help or advice because I didn’t think anything could be done for me.
“However, bumping into Toni that day – I remember it was six weeks after losing Chris, that was the day the darkness began to lift.
“From the moment, I met Toni, she helped me to understand the options available to me – and actually, I qualified for support, including Attendance Allowance, because of issues with my balance as I don’t have use of both of my big toes, so I was more prone to falling.
“Toni’s support and advice has given me the breathing space to live a little more comfortably and manage my health conditions, she’s made such a big difference to me – I struggle to quantify it really, I think the best way I can put it is she’s been my rescue angel.
“My advice to anyone that is struggling with their finances is to not suffer in silence and reach out for help. My situation changed through a chance encounter with Toni – and I dread to think what my situation would look like now without her advice.”
John’s story is being shared as part of Advice Week 2026, running this week, which shines a light on the life-changing impact of advice and the difference it makes to individuals and communities through AdviceUK’s Advice Saves campaign.
His experience demonstrates how access to the right advice at the right time can help people navigate major life changes, reduce financial worries and feel more secure in their homes.
Toni added: “Losing a partner can turn your world upside down, and worrying about your finances and whether you can stay in your home only adds to that pressure.
“In the Money Advice team, we are here to help customers understand their options and work through difficult situations. It’s about listening, treating people with compassion and helping them find a way forward when things feel uncertain.
“A big thank you to John for sharing his experience. It couldn’t come at a more apt time, with Advice Week highlighting the importance of accessible, timely advice, and that often, the right support can make all the difference.”
