From town crier to Hagrid’s body double: Meet the ShireLiving resident with a story to tell
He’s one of Shrewsbury’s best-known figures, making sure his voice is heard in the town for the last 50 years – and now is enjoying his latest chapter at ShireLiving’s Withywood residential scheme.
Town crier, Martin Wood has travelled far and wide throughout his career, proudly marking civic occasions that has seen him announce everything from local events, nuptials to even major Royal occasions and international celebrations.
His career even took him to the set of the Harry Potter films, where he was the body double for actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid.
Today, Martin lives at Withywood in Shrewsbury – an independent living scheme for people over the age of 55.
“I love living here. It’s a lovely community and there are lots of different people from all walks of life and with all kinds of fascinating stories and experiences,” he said.
“I refuse to call it retirement living – for a start I’m not retired, I still carry out the occasional civic duty – and at least once a week, I’m showing groups around Shrewsbury as a historical tour guide, and I even do the odd ghost tour, which is good fun.
“Also, here you have your own home and your independence but you’re also part of a community. There’s always someone to have a chat with or things going on, it’s brilliant.”
Martin’s unique career path means he’s never short of an interesting tale to tell when chatting to other residents.
He said: “I’ve been privileged to enjoy such a varied career, which has taken me to some incredibly prestigious events over the years. Probably my favourite memory if I had to choose one was when myself and other town criers from across the country travelled to London to celebrate the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday.
“I don’t know what came over me as I was stood outside Clarence House next to her carriage, but I started singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her rather spiritedly, and I remember – she looked me dead in the eye and thanked me. It was such a special moment, one I’ve never forgotten.”

“Every resident brings their own unique experiences, interests and story.
“We’re delighted that Martin is part of our community here and are proud of the work he continues to do to represent our wonderful town.”
