Money Matters: Could you get £150 off your energy bill this winter?
Thousands of households across Shropshire, Staffordshire, Telford & Wrekin will receive a £150 discount on their energy bills this winter, thanks to the reopening of a Government scheme from this month.
The Warm Home Discount Scheme could knock £150 off your electricity bill if you’re eligible. For many households, that’s a welcome bit of breathing space as we head into the colder months.
So, who is eligible? Jenna Wadelin, Housing Plus Group’s Energy Advisor, talks us through the scheme.
In England and Wales, you may qualify if, on 23 August 2026, you or your partner were receiving certain means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Pension Credit.
The good news is that most eligible households won’t need to apply. If you qualify, your electricity supplier will normally arrange the £150 discount automatically.
You won’t see the £150 arrive in your bank account – instead, it will be credited to your energy account. And if you’re using a prepayment meter, you can still qualify, with your supplier explaining how the discount will be applied.
If you think you should be eligible but haven’t heard anything yet, don’t panic. Keep an eye on your post and messages from your energy supplier and check the details they hold for you are up to date. If you’re unsure, contact your supplier and ask them about the Warm Home Discount.
And remember, this isn’t the only support available. The Warm Home Discount Scheme is separate from other help such as winter fuel payments and cold weather payments, so make sure to check what you could be entitled to rather than assuming you won’t qualify.
If you are worried about paying your energy bills, speak to your energy supplier in the first instance. There are also charities which offer support such as Marches Energy Agency, Energy Saving Trust, LEAP (Local Energy Advice Partners) and National Energy Action.
