Sport England grant helps older people get active

A grant of almost £4,000 from Sport England will help customers in our retirement living communities improve their health and wellbeing.

The grant means that people working and volunteering in our retirement living communities can be trained to deliver seated exercises suitable for those with limited mobility or difficulties walking and balancing. The specially-trained colleagues and volunteers will be able to provide these valuable sessions in many of our schemes in Staffordshire and Shropshire.

With the support of Sport England, Care Plus is also buying the resistance bands and other equipment used in the adapted workouts as well as boccia sets for each of our retirement living plus communities.

“We are delighted to have received this fantastic support from Sport England,” said Sue Atkins, head of specialist supported housing at Care Plus. “Seated exercise brings huge benefits for people who might not otherwise be able to take part in fitness activities. It can increase flexibility and strength, develop better coordination, reduce the risk of falls and just as importantly, boost confidence and self-esteem.

“These exercise sessions and our new boccia sets will also help bring people together, in a fun way.”
